Conflicted

The last few weeks or so, I've been feeling conflicted.  Confused about my career choice.

First and foremost, I've heard through the grapevine, that school districts in the area aren't really known to hire alternatively certified teachers.  Secondly, through in my degree, Sociology, instead of a core course, like English, Math, Science, etc... it doesn't equal a positive equation.

Above that, I've been feeling unsure? My biggest concern is for my children.  I've ALWAYS been right here with them, for them, available.  I am so worried about missing something in their lives by having a career.  Now if I honestly sit down and think about it.. that really is in the #1 spot in choosing teaching as my career, I'd be home more often with them vs a 9-5 type job.  I recently saw that the local college was hiring an office assistant, and it pays very comparable to Cody's job.  I got SO excited, and whipped up my resume, ready to apply for it.  Imagining myself in a college office environment.  The only reason I did not apply was because of the hours- 9am-6:30pm Mon-Thurs & 7:30am-12:30pm Saturdays.  That late in the evening makes it hard for childcare, and Colton is only home on weekends and I don't want to spend 1/2 of his weekend with me at work.

You see, my deciding factor is time with my kids.... and the gut feeling I got so excited about the prospect of the college job! I mean, downright "I COULD DO THAT!"  excited.  A college operates on a similar schedule with holiday breaks, the only downside is not off during the summers... but could have shorter hours?

Cody suggests upgrading my camera, and I build my own business & hours.  I love this idea, but we're approaching 30/in our 30s and are ready to buy a home and settle down... building that type of business to reach the income I'd need to make so we could purchase a home... would take awhile.

So I'm writing this for opinions of outsiders looking in.  For suggestions of other careers I might be interested in, that would allow me to be even slightly flexible to be at school functions, etc for my babies?

What if you worked at the college (or a similar type job) UNTIL you can afford to buy the things you needed for your photography business, until you get that on it's feet so to say. You could also check out the city's website and see what type of clerk positions they hold. Most of them would be M-F and have all holidays off for sure. Just a thought.

Wow, Mandy! I hope things work out so you can stay home with those little ones! I can't imagine how fun and rewarding a photography business would be! Keep us posted!
