Today's Kentucky Derby sparked a writing segment in me.
After the two favorites were scratched, it was anybody's race. Of course, there were some that were the new favorites, and then there were still those who had a shot in the dark.
Well, the winner, was a horse named Mine that Bird ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, had 50-1 odds. Lo and behold, he won, by 6 3/4 lengths.
This horse, gives me a ray of hope. He was a $9500 horse, trained by a small farm of good hard-working folks, and was droven in from New Mexico in a horse trailer accompanied by his trainer with a shattered foot. He was competeting against big wig farms, horses BRED for racing and nothing else, that were bought for million(s) of dollars, some from overseas, and flown in on planes or brought in fancy trucks and trailers. Even the jockey is a good 'ol boy from Lousiana who had a LOVE for the sport, cried that his Mama and Daddy weren't there to see him b/c they were in heaven, who has been BLESSED with his second Derby win. Calvin had the guts to fight through the other horses along the rail.
Maybe, it gives me a sense of comfort. And maybe I am cheesey for believing so. But, maybe also, its a sign. That we hard-working, non-rich, perserverant folks can hang tight, have high hopes and optimism, CAN make it through the crowd of rich CEO's and politicians, and as the owner of Mine that Bird just said, "come out up front".
Maybe. Possible. Definate. We'll be A-OK, just have to be strong and brave!
Its nice to see a little ray of hope in this recession.

Ooh good post! I got to see that race amongst a huge crowd and will admit to getting a little misty that this huge long shot just creamed the competition like that. Also, it was awesome seeing these two little old ladies next to me just about pass out when their combined bet on that long shot pony( against their all-knowing husbands' advice) won them a total of eighty thousand dollars. It was a great race to see.
was the horse from sunland park, nm? that's real close to wear we are.
