Unconditional Love & Kindness

On The Today Show, a tiger cub adopting golden retriever was featured. This momma dog just took over raising these cubs who were rejected by their mother. She was so proud of her babies, if you've ever seen a good momma dog, you'd know what I mean. She was letting them climb over her, doing puppy-like things, all the while, seeming to have a smile on her doggy face.

And then it occured to me, why can't humans just be that uncondtional? Why do we place strings on our kindess and love for fellow humans? I mean, here is this dog, nurturing and caring for these others who were completely not her same species!!! And we humans can't even be kind to another of our own kind, without thinking "well, what am I going to gain from this?"

As a first-time mother, I reall am baffled at how unconditional love can really be. There is NOTHING on my son could EVER EVER do to make me stop loving him. And it terrifies me to know that people are going to be mean to him "just because" later on down the road. Why will that happen to him?

Maybe we have something to learn from the furry or scaly or feathered members of the animal kingdom? Perhaps we aren't the most intelligent multi-celled creatures after all....
